Honda Hybrid technology explained

All our hybrid cars are powered by Honda's acclaimed e:HEV full hybrid powertrain, designed to increase fuel efficiency without compromising performance.

It's made up of two electric motors, a compact and high-capacity battery, and a fuel-efficient petrol engine.

Electric drive

Drawing power solely from the battery, delivering an instant response and EV-like silence.

What makes Honda Hybrids so unique?

Hybrid cars offer a range of benefits, including lower emissions and improved fuel economy compared to regular fuel-powered cars.

However, Honda hybrids bring many more additional benefits as described below:

You can feel the difference

Our full hybrids, whether self-charging or plug-in, can run longer on electric power alone - unlike a mild hybrid - to deliver an exhilarating electrified performance.

Honda’s hybrid heritage

Our technical excellence comes from our pioneering relationship with hybrids. Having launched Europe's second commercial hybrid vehicle in 1999, our engineers continue to push the boundaries even further by taking their motor racing know-how and applying it to their unique hybrid powertrain.

Power your journey

While Honda e:HEV full hybrids are self-charging, offering long driving range without the need to plug-in to a mains electricity supply or stop at a fuel station, the Honda e:PHEV plug-ins are equipped with large batteries which can power longer journeys on pure electric, producing very little CO2 emissions.

Economical and efficient

The potential to run on electric power from the hybrid battery will mean you use less fuel and, with fewer visits to the filling station, you will lower your running costs. You also get added peace of mind with our 5-year/100,000km hybrid battery warranty*. *Whichever comes first.

Original hybrid system

The e:HEV is an innovative hybrid system unlike any other in the market. Using two electric motors, the system cleverly switches between a battery and an electric motor to drive the car. When the battery charge is low, the electric motor is powered by a generator motor, which is driven by the engine. At lower speeds, it’s more efficient for the engine to run the generator rather than directly powering the car. The engine only directly drives the wheels when cruising at higher speeds, such as during extended motorway driving.

alt

The driver’s hybrid

Honda’s philosophy centres on delivering the "joy of driving." Our hybrids—whether self-charging, plug-in, coupe, or SUV—blend performance, comfort, and efficiency. The latest Civic is praised for dynamic handling, while the CR-V offers strong performance as Honda's largest SUV.

alt

Advantage of full hybrid economy

As full hybrids that run on electric power from the battery, Honda’s hybrids use less fuel than mild hybrids and thus will lower your running costs. Honda is also known for building reliable cars and added peace of mind comes with a long manufacturer’s warranty*.

e:PHEV plug-in powertrain

The latest Honda CR-V features our first plug-in hybrid with the e:PHEV powertrain. In EV mode, it offers up to 50 miles of emission-free driving. Even when the battery is low, it continues to deliver excellent fuel efficiency, comparable to the full hybrid e:HEV model.

What is a hybrid car?

A hybrid vehicle gets its power from two sources – an electric battery and an internal combustion engine. These can either work together or on their own, delivering smooth power and exhilarating performance.

Whether you’re driving one of our large hybrid SUVs or the sporty Civic, our e:HEV hybrid technology allows your vehicle to mostly run on battery power or the electric motor thus providing the most efficient performance, whatever the conditions.

Honda hybrid cars: FAQs

What happens if my hybrid car battery dies?

If your hybrid car battery dies, it'll need to be replaced or the car won't work properly. If you notice the car losing its efficiency or struggling to hold a charge, contact your nearest dealer as soon as possible to arrange a battery change.

How are hybrid car batteries disposed of?

All Honda batteries from electric and hybrid vehicles are recycled through the expanded sustainability partnership with SNAM.

End-life-batteries will either be recycled for ‘second-life’ renewable energy storage uses or for their extractable valuable materials, such as lithium and cobalt.

Is it worth buying a hybrid car?

A hybrid car is more fuel efficient and cost effective than a petrol vehicle. As the world quickly moves towards an electric future, a hybrid car is also a perfect green alternative to the traditional petrol engine, while simultaneously giving you far less range anxiety than an electric vehicle.

Do hybrids last longer?

Due to the combination of a petrol engine and battery power, there's less wear and tear on a hybrid car's engine. Regenerative braking also reduces the wear on brakes, which lowers the need for maintenance, meaning your hybrid car may last longer than a petrol or diesel equivalent.

** Indicative charge times shown, for comparison purposes only, in optimal conditions, such as a temperature around 25°C. Actual charging times may vary depending on various factors, including the age, type, condition, charging capacity and temperature of the charging unit and the battery, the starting charge and environmental conditions such as the outdoor temperature at the point of use. Charge times may be longer in colder weather and if battery temperature activates safeguarding technology.
